On 20 and 21 March 2019, Code Week ambassadors and coordinators from ministries of education met in Brussels to prepare for the next edition of EU Code Week. One of the meeting’s major purpose was to celebrate the success of the 2018 campaign.

The Ambassadors and the Edu Coordinators met with the European Commissioner Mariya Gabriel. who was very appreciative of the work carried out by all during the Code Week 2018.  The European Commissioner once again recalled the goal of reaching 50% of all schools in Europe by 2020.  Malta has already superceded this target in 2018, so much so that Gerard de Graaf’s, Director for Digital Single Market during the launch of the National eSkills Strategy stated that ‘Malta has exceeded by far the goals which we have set together at European Union level for 2020’

During the meeting the Ambassadors and Edu coordinators analysed the key success factors from 2018 and discussed how to work better together. Presentations were delivered by various countries to share National best practices.   The participants underlined the role of partnerships with public and private institutions, the good experience of working closely with teachers and the need to offer something special and original during the events. They also discussed how to better work together across borders, create more learning materials and the possibility of linking with other national initiatives.

The participants also met with the  first Vice-President of the Committee of  the Regions Markku Markkula who invited event organisers to work more closely with European regions and called on the participants to encourage schools to take part in Code Week.

This year, EU Code Week will take place from 5 to 20 October. Organisers can already register their events and pin them on the EU Code Week map. The multi-lingual codeweek.eu website offers a record volume of resources, toolkits, video tutorials and other materials. This helps organisers who do not have a deep knowledge of coding to prepare appealing activities.
